Lady Cardinals improve to 2-0 in 50th District play with 60-41 win over Whitley County

WILLIAMSBURG — Maci Messer turned in a 23-point scoring effort while hitting all eight of her free throw attempts to lead South Laurel to a 60-41 win over Whitley County on Friday.

Callie Jones added 19 points in the win for the Lady Cardinals while Skeeter Mabe added seven points.

The win improved No. 13 South Laurel to 13-5 overall and 2-0 against 50th District opponents. The Lady Colonels fall to 7-8 and 1-1 versus district foes.

“Good win on the road in 50th District, but did not think we played very well defensively and shot the ball poorly from 3-point line beside Callie Jones,” South Laurel coach Todd Windlan said. “Maci Messer got us going in the second half, scoring 15 of her game-high 23 points, and we only allowed (Jonna) Rice to have two points in the secind half after allowing her 14 points. Callie Jones had a solid game for us scoring 19, Skeeter Mabe had seven and Kenzie Fannin had five off the bench. We did make 13-of-14 Free throw attempts, so that was good to see.  We play tomorrow at 5:15 p.m. in the Roy Bowling Classic versus Wayne County. Go Cards.”

Two 3s by Jones and four points apiece from Messer and Mabe allowed South Laurel to build a 14-13 edge in the first quarter.

The Lady Cardinals’ edge grew to 30-22 at halftime as Jones added five points in the second quarter and Messer chipped in four points.

South Laurel outscored Whitley County, 18-9, in the third quarter as Messer poured in nine points during the period while Jones added four points.

Jonna Rice led Whitley County with 16 points while Maddie Hopkins added nine points.
