Fourth Time’s the Charm: Lady Colonels Stun Corbin to Capture 50th District Crown

WILLIAMSBURG — The fourth time was the charm for Whitley County.

After three earlier losses this season to Corbin, the defending 13th Region champion Lady Colonels flipped the script when it mattered most — sweeping the Lady Redhounds, 25-23, 25-9, 25-19, to capture the 50th District championship on their home floor Tuesday night.

Whitley County improves to 32-5 with the statement win, while Corbin falls to 24-13.

It was a night of redemption, energy, and execution for David Halcomb’s squad, which fed off a raucous home crowd and refused to back down against its longtime rival.

The Lady Colonels showed poise in a tight opening set, dominance in the second, and the maturity of champions in closing out the third to secure another district title.

“This was such a great win for this team,” he  said. “We had a phenomenal crowd and pep section came out — our girls didn’t disappoint. They played with so much heart and passion for the game. I’m extremely happy for our girls! They have worked so hard and our girls have been playing really well, it’s good to see them execute in front of our home crowd.

“There were a couple times where we lost a little momentum, but we stayed right in it and was able to side out at some crucial points,” Halcomb added. “We will enjoy this 50th District Championship today and tomorrow, then it’s right back to work.”

The victory not only avenged three regular-season defeats but also sends a clear message heading into next week’s 13th Region Tournament — the Lady Colonels are peaking at the perfect time.
