Harlan County Outlasts Williamsburg in Five-Set Battle

WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg Lady Yellow Jackets came up just short in a marathon match Tuesday night, falling to Harlan County, 3-2, in a 13th Region volleyball clash.

The loss dropped Williamsburg to 5-6 on the season while the Lady Black Bears improved to 4-2.

The two teams traded momentum throughout the night, with Williamsburg taking the opening set before Harlan County battled back in the second. The Lady Jackets dominated the third, but the Lady Black Bears answered again to force a decisive fifth set.

In the end, Harlan County held on in a tightly contested 15-12 finish.

Williamsburg coach Dirk Berta praised his team’s effort while stressing the importance of learning from tough opponents.

“Another quality opponent that we intentionally put on our schedule,” he said. “In these tough games, we are still working on consistency on getting out of serve receive and sustaining serving runs. At times, we did that tonight and put ourselves in a position to win.

“We just came up short tonight,” Berta added. “Credit to Harlan County, they are a quality team out of the 52nd District. We will get back at practice tomorrow and continue working on the things that we need to work on. As always, Go Jackets.”
