WILLIAMSBURG — South Laurel and Whitley County hooked up in a 49th District classic with the Cardinals edging the Colonels, 3-2, on Thursday.
Whitley County took a 2-0 lead just 16 seconds into the second half before South Laurel rallied and scored three unanswered goals in the final 33 minutes.
Ryan Martinez’s goal cut the Cardinals deficit to 2-1 with 33:29 remaining in the second half while Blake Robinson added a goal via a penalty kick, tying the game at two apiece with only 29 minutes remaining.
Robinson’s goal at the 56-minute mark turned out to be the game winner.
“It took us getting in a 2-0 hole to finally woke up.” South Laurel coach Brooks Cawood said. “We got our first goal from Ryan Martinez with an assist from Bryce Jones.
Blake Robinson made a great play in the box and scored a PK as a result of a handball. Blake also scored the winning goal on a nice assist from Jase Jones.
“I can’t say enough about our guys and their attitudes,” he added. “They knew the second half was going to be tough and responded to the challenge from a Whitley County team that just did not let up.”
The win improves South Laurel to 3-0 while the Colonels falls to 4-2.
