HARLAN — David Halcomb’s Whitley County Lady Colonels secured their season-opener by defeating Harlan County on the road, 25-23, 25-14, and 25-22.
The three-time defending regional champs started off slow but finished strong.
“It’s a good win for our team on the road,” Halcomb said. “I consider Harlan County to be a top three team in our region and I thought they came out ready to play. We were on our heels the first set, but I was really proud of how we came back to pull it out. We had some really good moments where the girls fought together and we also learned what we need to work on.
“Hopefully, this will be a good lesson learned that we have to come out ready to play,” he added. “That falls on me and honestly, I’ll take the blame for us not starting quicker. We have to get better and I’m fully confident we will. This is a special team.”
