WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County might have suffered its first loss of the season after dropping a 4-1 decision to Russell on Saturday, but coach Michael Branham was pleased with his team’s effort.
“I’m proud of the way we battled tonight, the final score doesn’t quite reflect how close the game was,” he said. “We gave up two goals in the first half and missed several chances. In the second we came out with intensity and Rizzo Cima found the back of the net off a great ball by Rowen Walters. From there we had momentum but couldn’t capitalize. “Credit to their goalie, he had a big game,” Branham added. “We had a chance to tie with a penalty kick with about six minutes left and their goalie made a stop and they immediately converted on a penalty which sucked the life out of us in the final five minutes. It was a hard fought battle all game and I think my guys will bounce back Monday when we face Harlan county in the 2A.”
