LEXINGTON — The Corbin girls’ tennis team had hopes of bringing home a team state championship this week but fell in first round action to top ranked Greenwood, 3-0, during Tuesday’s KHSAA Girls’ Team Tennis Tournament.
In the team format, all five matches go on at once (three singles and two doubles) and as soon as a team wins three, the others stop. Mattie-Ann Millikan lost in the No. 2 singles spot 0-6, 0-6 while Emma Faulkner lost in the 3 singles spot 0-6, 0-6. Olivia McArthur and Tory Canady lost in the two doubles spot, 3-6, 3-6.
Isabella Lopez was unfinished in the No. 1 singles 4-6, 3-4, and Lindsay Jones and Katie Morton were unfinished in the No. 1 doubles, leading 6-1, 3-3.
“The team state format takes the winning team from each region and plays a blind draw with no seeding,” Corbin coach Chris Jones said. “It just so happened, we were the second best team in the state and we drew the first best team in the state first round. It’s unfortunate, but it’s just the nature of the beast in the team format.”
