13th Region Heavyweights Collide: Colonels edge South Laurel, 1-0, in eight innings

WILLIAMSBURG — The 13th Region’s top ranked teams squared off in a huge 50th District battle as Whitley County and South Laurel battled for eight innings before the Colonels managed to pull off a 1-0 win.

After consecutive one-out singles by EJ Allen and Henry Bowling put runners on second and third, Ronald Osborne followed with a sacrifice fly that scored the game’s only run, as Allen raced home, and was called safe sliding in after Reece Noble’s throw to catcher Vince Sizemore.

The matchup turned out to be a pitcher’s duel between Whitley County’s Christian Wilson, and South Laurel’s Waylon Hensley.

Wilson tossed eight shutout innings, allowing only four hits while limiting the Cardinals to five base runners.

Hensley held the Colonels’ batters in check until the eighth inning. Whitley County entered the bottom of the eighth with only one hit. Hensley tossed 7.2 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out six batters.

EJ Allen, Bowling and Ty Petrey had Whitley County’s lone hits while South Laurel’s Will Alsip, Jack Vaughn, Jamison West, and Reece Noble had a hit apiece.

The win improved the Colonels to 14-3 overall, and 2-1 against 50th District opponents while the Cardinals fall to 13-4 and 2-1 versus district foes.
