Trey Smith captures 100th win; Cardinals off to best start since 2014

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — South Laurel coach Trey Smith had a lot of be happy about after his Cardinals remained unbeaten, improving to 7-0, while coming back from two different deficits to defeat Rowan County, 13-6.

The 7-0 start matches the 2014 South Laurel squad’s 7-0 record to start the season. The 2014 team went on to win the 50th District and 13th Region championships along with an appearance in the state tournament’s Final Four.

But that’s not all.

The win also gave Smith his 100th career victory as the Cardinals’ coach.

“I was proud of our boys today,” Smith said. “It was an intense game. We kept our composure throughout the game and we really battled. Vince Sizemore came up big again for us. We did a lot of good things.

“Any time we compared to that (2014) team that’s a good thing because they were a great team,” he added. “They had a lot of talent and ability. That’s awesome being mentioned with them. We’ve got a close group of kids and I feel like they get it.”

Will Alsip picked up the win on the mound, allowing six hits and only one earned run while striking out three batters. Keaton Creech pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits and one earned run.”

Sizemore came up huge at the plate with two hits and three RBI while Alsip had a hit and three RBI. Jack Vaughn delivered a hit, and two RBI while also scoring twice. Bryson Turner finished with a hit and an RBI and two runs scored while Jameson Durham drove in a run. Austin Byrd scored once while Waylon Hensley finished with two RBI, and a run scored.
