No. 16 Lady Cardinals get back to winning ways

RUSSELL SPRINGS — No. 16 South Laurel’s got back to its winning ways on Monday, picking up a big 56-41 road win over Russell County.

The Lady Cardinals received a 21-point scoring effort from sophomore Skeeter Mabe while Macie Messer added 10 points while Callie Jones and Jamie Buenaventura added nine points apiece.

The win improved South Laurel to 21-5 as the Lady Cardinals have now won 16 out of their last 17 games.

“We played a very good first half,” South Laurel coach Tod Windlan said. “Skeeter Mabe had 15 points at the half, (Maci) Messer had seven, (Jamie) Buenaventura had six and (Callie) Jones and (Aubrey) Bundy had five apiece.

“Then in the second half, we got complacent and played very poorly for our expectations,” he added. “Mabe ended the night with 21, and played a very nice game. Messer had 10, Jones had nine and Buenaventura had nine. Lady Cardinals will be back in action at home on Thursday, varsity only, at 6 p.m. versus Danville. Go Cards.”

South Laurel cruised to an easy 42-16 lead in the first half before being outscored, 25-14, in the second half.
