BARBOURVILLE — Knox Central’s young squad delivered a championship moment to remember Tuesday, capturing the 51st District Volleyball Tournament title with a four-set victory over Pineville on its home floor.
The Lady Panthers defeated the Lady Mountain Lions, 25-19, 25-12, 23-25 and 25-8, overcoming a third-set setback before dominating the fourth to secure the district crown.
Knox Central established control early, taking the opening two sets before Pineville battled back with a narrow 25-23 victory in the third to extend the match.
The Lady Panthers responded in commanding fashion, allowing just eight points in the fourth set to put the finishing touches on their championship performance.
For Knox Central coach Erin Salyers, the victory was about much more than adding another trophy to the program’s collection. It represented the culmination of hard work, perseverance and belief in a young team that refused to let outside expectations define its season.
“I couldn’t be prouder of my girls tonight. We came out a little sluggish in the first and third sets, but these girls never stopped fighting,” she said. “They fought for every point, for each other, and for the name across their jerseys. At the end of the night, we got to celebrate a district championship on our home floor.
“I heard the doubts, a young team with young coaches,” Salyers added. “But none of that mattered to us. These girls believed in themselves, believed in each other, and put in the work when nobody was watching. We wanted it, we worked for it, and tonight we earned it.”
The championship carried additional significance for Knox Central’s seniors, who played their final home match and walked off their home court as district champions.
Salyers specifically praised seniors Kennadi and Milli for their contributions to the program and the opportunity to close out their home careers with a championship celebration.
“What makes tonight even more special is knowing my seniors got to experience this moment on their home floor,” she said. “Tonight was the last time they will ever play a volleyball game at Knox Central, and that is so bittersweet. I couldn’t have asked for a better way to send them off. I am especially proud of Kennadi and Milli. They have given so much to this program, and seeing them celebrate a district championship at home is something I’ll never forget.
“People don’t always see the long practices, the tough losses, the tears, or the sacrifices these girls make,” Salyers added. “But nights like tonight make every single bit of it worth it.
“I’m just so incredibly proud of this team. They have so much heart, and I wouldn’t trade this group of girls for anything.”
