Corbin Overcomes Slow Start, Rallies Past South Laurel to Secure Region Tournament Berth

WILLIAMSBURG — Corbin is headed to the 13th Region Volleyball Tournament, but the Lady Redhounds have their sights set on adding a 50th District championship before turning their attention to regional play.

The Lady Redhounds overcame a sluggish opening set Monday night, rallying to defeat South Laurel in four sets, 24-26, 25-19, 25-17, 25-14, in the semifinals of the 50th District Volleyball Tournament.

The victory improved Corbin to 22-14 on the season while bringing South Laurel’s campaign to an end with a 14-16 record.

After dropping a tightly contested opening set, Corbin responded by finding its rhythm in the second frame. The Lady Redhounds evened the match with a 25-19 victory before taking control with a 25-17 win in the third set.

Corbin continued to build momentum in the fourth, closing out the match with a convincing 25-14 victory to secure its spot in the district championship game.

Corbin coach Krystal Jones praised her team’s ability to regroup after a difficult start and make the necessary adjustments to take control of the match.

“I’m really proud of our girls tonight. We came out a little flat in that first set, but I loved the way they responded. They settled in, made adjustments, and found a way to get it done,” Jones said.

The victory also guarantees the Lady Redhounds a spot in the upcoming 13th Region Tournament, but Jones made it clear her team isn’t satisfied with simply advancing.

“We punched our ticket to region tonight, and that’s something we don’t take for granted. We’re excited to be moving on, but our focus is already on tomorrow. We still have work to do. Go Hounds,” Jones added.

Corbin will now face Whitley County (32-4) in the 50th District championship after the Lady Colonels defeated Williamsburg in straight sets in the other semifinal.
