LONDON — North Laurel’s senior class delivered when it mattered most Tuesday, accounting for seven of the Lady Jaguars’ eight goals in an 8-0 win over Whitley County in the 49th District Girls Soccer Tournament semifinals.
The victory improved North Laurel to 6-6-2 and advanced the Lady Jaguars to Thursday’s district championship, scheduled for a 6 p.m. start. Whitley County finished its season at 6-7-1.
North Laurel also continued its long-running dominance in the series, improving to 24-0 all-time against the Lady Colonels.
“Our seniors stepped up tonight and scored seven of our eight goals,” North Laurel coach Jason Welch said. “They brought a lot of energy and we moved the ball as well as we have all season.”
Annabelle Welch led the Lady Jaguars with a hat trick while McKinley Mastin scored twice. Presley Thompson, Eden Begley and Mia Thompson each added one goal.
Mastin also recorded an assist, while Mia Thompson finished with two assists.
“Annabelle Welch led the way with three goals, McKinley Mastin had two followed by Presley Thompson, Eden Begley, and Mia Thompson each with one goal,” Welch said. “McKinley added one assist while Mia had two.”
Welch said North Laurel’s preparation over the past week carried over into the semifinal victory.
“We’ve practiced really well over the last week and it showed tonight,” Welch said. “I’m proud of how well they are working to love the ball and find the open space.”
Whitley County coach Ilias Lankford credited his team for continuing to battle despite North Laurel taking advantage of its opportunities.
“It was a hard-fought match but North took advantage of the moments they created,” Lankford said. “Our girls fought tooth and nail with everything they’ve had.”
Lankford also praised his players for their effort throughout the season and offered a message to the Lady Colonels’ seniors.
“I want to thank the girls for a good season and hope that they keep their heads held high,” Lankford said. “Fought until the end with everything they had. Wish all the best for our seniors in their future endeavors.”
North Laurel now turns its attention to Thursday’s championship match.
“We’ll enjoy this one tonight and be back on the practice field tomorrow to prepare for the district championship,” Welch said.
