WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County put together a dominant day on its home floor Saturday, going 6-0 and winning the Lady Colonel First Priority Volleyball Classic without dropping a set.
The Lady Colonels improved to 22-1 and extended their winning streak to 22 matches.
Whitley County opened pool play with a 25-6, 25-10 win over East Ridge before defeating Betsy Layne 25-17, 28-26. The Lady Colonels then closed pool play with a 25-10, 25-12 victory over Estill County.
“What a great day of volleyball on our campus today,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “It is so much work hosting an event this magnitude with weeks of planning and preparation. So thankful to anyone who helped with our tournament.”
Whitley County was just as impressive once Gold Bracket play began. The Lady Colonels defeated Pulaski County 25-9, 25-10 in the quarterfinals before taking down Knott County Central 25-12, 25-13 in the semifinals.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with our team,” Halcomb said. “They are playing amazing right now. To get through six matches against quality opponents and not drop a set just shows a lot about our team. Everyone contributed in a big way throughout the day. A total team effort.”
Whitley County then finished the day by defeating Bishop Brossart 25-17, 25-18 in the championship match.
Halcomb pointed to the final two victories as especially meaningful, with the Lady Colonels defeating two teams expected to contend deep into the postseason in their respective regions.
“We defeated a team in the semis who many pick to win the 14th Region in Knott County Central,” Halcomb said. “Then to take down 10th Region favorite Bishop Brossart, who was 21-1 coming into the match, was huge for us.”
The championship capped a perfect 6-0 day for Whitley County and continued one of the strongest stretches of the season for the Lady Colonels.
“I’m happy for our girls,” Halcomb said. “They’ve worked so hard for this. Proud of them.”
