MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Knox Central battled throughout and had its chances late, but Fairport held on for a 3-2 win Wednesday in a tightly contested matchup that went eight innings.
The Panthers (3-5) stayed within striking distance throughout the game, holding a 2-1 edge entering the seventh inning before Fairport tied the game at two apiece in the top of the seventh while scoring the go-ahead run, and eventual winning run in the top of the eighth.
Knox Central finished with seven hits, led by Trevor Smith, who went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Brady Engle added a double and scored a run, while Jonathan Hobbs, Matthew Powenski, Easton Ramsey and Tate Marcum each collected hits.
The Panthers scored runs in the fourth and sixth innings, but couldn’t hold on to the lead in the end.
On the mound, Russell Mills gave Knox Central a strong start, allowing just one run over four innings. Jathan Collins followed with two scoreless innings in relief while Hayden Melton took the loss after allowing two runs over the final two innings.
