South Laurel rolls to second straight 50th District championship

CORBIN — South Laurel eighth grader McKenzie Fannin continued her impressive play along with junior Maci Messer as the duo scored 17 points apiece, leading the Lady Cardinals to their second consecutive 50th District championship with a 66-32 win over Whitley County.

“Super-proud of my players, coaches and community tonight,” South Laurel  coach Tod Windlan said. “We came out with relentless pressure on defense and that set the tone to our great start. We battled through a little foul trouble in first half but when the half started we continued the defensive pressure and built our lead.”

The Lady Cardinals built a 13-3 lead in the first quarter, and a 29-17 edge at halftime before outscoring the Lady Colonels, 37-15, in the second half.

“I thought Aubrey Bundy set the tone on defense and Kenzie Fannin came in off the bench and gave us a big lift on offense,” Windlan said. “Skeeter Mabe controlled the game and defended Hopkins very well and Callie Jones and Maci Messer did a great job on Rice as well.

“Maci Messer had 10 of her 17 in the second half, Kenzie Fannin had nine of her 17 in the second half to lead us,” he added. “Callie Jones had nine, Skeeter Mabe seven, Aubrey Bundy six, and Ryleigh Bretz had six.”

Maddy Hopkins led Whitley County with 13 points while Jonna Rice finished with seven points.
