LOUISVILLE — South Laurel picked up a first-round victory in the prestigious Queen of the Commonwealth Tournament with a 65-46 win over Valley, improving the Lady Cardinals to 6-1 on the season.
Despite a slow start offensively, South Laurel settled in and took control, using balanced scoring and strong play on both ends of the floor to pull away.
“We got off to slow start by not making shots the first few minutes of game but then starting making nice reads and running in transition to get easy looks,” South Laurel coach Tod Windlan said. “(It was a) long bus ride, and the late game may have led to that slow start but good to see us recover and play a good first half. We play at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow against Taylor County. Go Cards.”
Callie Jones led the Lady Cardinals on both ends of the court, finishing with a game-high 17 points. Ryleigh Bretz added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Shelby Smith provided a spark off the bench with 10 points. Skeeter Mabe chipped in eight points and six rebounds as South Laurel continued its strong early-season run in tournament play.
