CORBIN — Cruz Cima, Noah Cima, Kade Elam, Will Freeman, JT Gentry, Cooper McCauley, and Lucas Tarvin are part of special senior group that accomplished something no other senior class has done.
They’re the first senior class that can lay claim to winning three region titles during their four-year varsity at Corbin.
“I can’t say enough about this group,” Corbin coach Cody Philpot said. “That says a lot about their talent, but doesn’t scratch the surface of how good of people they are and the character that they show on and off the field. They have been instrumental in keeping the team together and keeping the faith because they knew what it took to win because they’d seen and been apart of it. It was easy for our young guys to trust them and trust the process.
“It’s always a huge help to have a bunch of guys that have been through it all before,” he added. “Postseason games are different, you have to be ready to play but have to be able to stay relaxed at the same time.”
Philpot said they’re many things this year’s senior players has brought to the table, helping Corbin capture its second consecutive 13th Region crown.
“This is a special group. Their roles vary on the field but each of them have been really good at being the best version of themself. “And with that, has been a willingness to be whatever the team needs at a given time,” he added. “Whether that be delivering a big hit or pitch or being a comedian to lighten the mood or a shoulder to lean on for a teammate that needs it.”
All of the seniors have contributed throughout the season, helping with the Redhounds’ success, but none were more evident than Lucas Tarvin’s gem on the mound in the 13th Region title game combined with Kade Elam’s leadoff homer in the first inning that helped lead to Corbin’s win.
“Lucas’ performance was one that you always hope for,” Philpot said. “He’s a kid that has always been the ultimate teammate, and an unquestioned leader of this group even though his role has not always been the biggest. He’s been kind of a utility guy for us over the years and been willing to move wherever needed. When we needed someone to go out and give the best performance of his career, he was ready.
“Our kids were confident coming into the game Wednesday, you could feel that all day,” he added. “When Kade hit that, it reinforced what they all believed and they went out and followed his lead.”
