MOUNT VERNON — South Laurel and Rockcastle County hooked up in an old fashioned battle on Monday with the Lady Rockets doing just enough to pull out a 66-60 win.
The Lady Cardinals (0-1) fell behind 23-14 in the first quarter and trailed, 37-33 at halftime.
The Lady Rockets outscored South Laurel, 19-13, in the third quarter to take a 56-46 advantage into the fourth quarter.
“Played hard and had chances to take lead or cut lead late third and early in fourth but shots didn’t fall,” South Laurel coach Tod Windlan said. “Proud of how hard we played and competed.”
Callie Jones led South Laurel with 13 points while Skeeter Mabe added 11 points. Maci Messer added nine points while Ryleigh Bretz and Jamie Buenaventura added eight points apiece.
The Lady Cardinals will be back in action Saturday against Pikeville at North Laurel. The game is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start.
