Lady Colonels advance to 49th District Girls’ Tournament finals with 3-1 win over Corbin

MANCHESTER — Michael Sawyer’s Whitley County Lady Colonels have earned a spot in Wednesday’s 49th District Girls’ Soccer Tournament championship while also advancing to the 13th Region Tournament after upending Corbin on Monday with a 3-1 victory.

“We came to play tonight. Our defense played outstanding,” Sawyers said. “Our center back Andrea Dees and our goalie Rheagen Strickland played an amazing game. Our midfield dropped well and helped cover defensive as well as attacking offensively, too. The combination of Autumn and Norma kept pressure on them offensively and resulted in three goals for us. I am so proud of these girls. Their hard work has resulted in us going to the district championship game for the first time as a program.”

Autumn Sawyers had two goals in the win and Norma Proffitt had one goal.

Whitley County (8-6) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never looked back against the Lady Redhounds, who finishes the season with a 4-11-1 mark.

The Lady Colonels will now face North Laurel in Wednesday’s championship game at 6:30 p.m.

The two teams met on Aug. 27 with the Lady Jaguars picking up a 3-1 win.

Whitley County will attempt to pick up its first-ever win over the Lady Jaguars, who leads the series 18-0.
