MONTICELLO — South Laurel’s had hopes of extending its win streak to five games on the diamond, but host Wayne County had different thoughts.
Trey Smith’s squad looked to be in control with a 3-1 lead in the third inning but Wayne County answered with three unanswered runs, stunning South Laurel with a 4-3 comeback win.
South Laurel (19-10) was looking to become the first team in the 13th Region to notch 20 wins, but will have to attempt to accomplish the feat on Friday against Madison Southern.
Smiths Cardinals were outhit 10-9, as Vince Sizemore led the way with a 2-for-4 effort. Austin Byrd followed with two hits and an RBI while Bunter Bundy delivered two hits, and scored once. Keaton Creech had a hit and one run scored while Will Alsip and Waylon Hensley finished with a hit apiece.
Creech took the loss, tossing 2 1/3 of an inning while allowing two hits, and one earned run. Jacob Culler went 3 2/3 of an inning, giving up eight hits and three earned runs. He struck out one batter.
