<\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"LONDON \u2014 South Laurel opened 50th District play with an impressive home win Tuesday night, pulling away in the second half for a 60-38 victory over Corbin as the Lady Cardinals improved to 12-5 overall and 1-0 in district play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
South Laurel edged in front early, taking a 13-12 lead after the first quarter behind five points from Aubrey Bundy, who knocked down a 3-pointer, while Callie Jones added four points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Lady Cardinals carried a slim 25-21 lead into halftime as Skeeter Mabe scored six points in the second quarter. Corbin stayed within striking distance behind four points from Lydia King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
South Laurel took charge in the third quarter while holding Corbin to just four points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maci Messer scored eight points, Bundy knocked down another 3-pointer and Mabe added four points as the Lady Cardinals stretched the lead to 41-25 entering the final eight minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
South Laurel put the game away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Corbin 19-13 to seal the win. Messer scored six more points in the period while Bundy added five points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Messer led South Laurel with 18 points, while Mabe followed with 15 and Bundy finished with 13 points and three three-pointers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the game, South Laurel coach Todd Windlan praised his team\u2019s second-half response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGreat way to start off 50th District play with a home win,\u201d he said. \u201cThought we played OK in the first half but just did not make shots and our defense was not up to our standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We made some halftime adjustments on their zone and got the ball inside more and our defense picked up the intensity which led to some easy baskets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSkeeter played very well all-around game,\u201d Windlan added. \u201cMaci had a great second half and Aubrey was the spark plug for us on both ends. I thought Jones, Bretz and Smith did a good job rebounding the basketball. We play at Whitley County Friday for another 50th district game. Proud of my team and proud of the Cardinal Crazies as they showed up big-time for us! Go Cards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Corbin drops to 6-6 overall and 0-1 in district play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
