BOWLING GREEN \u2014 The Corbin Girls\u2019 Tennis team traveled to Bowling Green on Saturday to participate as one of the eight teams (four from Kentucky and four from Tennessee) in the Leachman Border Bash hosted by South Warren High School.
The girls played at Buchanon Park in Bowling Green, home to the Western Kentucky University (WKU) tennis teams.
Corbin finished in 3rd place, one spot up from last year\u2019s 4th place finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Senior, Olivia McArthur stepped up and played the No. 1 Singles spot and got a very impressive and convincing first round win 6-2, 6-0 before losing battles in her next two matches. McArthur went 1-2 for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cOlivia has such a complete game with a huge serve,\u201d Corbin coach Chris Jones said. \u201cI know this wasn\u2019t the outcome she would have wanted, but it\u2019s matches like these that will have her ready to go deep in post season play in our region and state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Freshman and first-year player, Mattie Millikan, played the No. 2 Singles spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As expected, Mattie ran up against more experienced players throughout the tournament and went 0-3 for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI watched her fight hard with a smile on her face all day and as a coach, you can\u2019t ask for more than that,\u201d Jones said. \u201cShe\u2019s very athletic and has a heart to win. She will be a top player for our program for several years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In the #2 Doubles spot, freshman Tory Canady and Sophomore Amy Agosto teamed up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese girls lost two very close matches in the early rounds before pulling off a hard fought victory in a tie breaker to win their third round, going 1-2 for the day,\u201d Jones said. \u201cTory has definitely been our most improved player from last year and she fought through a shoulder injury today and still came up with some big points when we needed them. Amy has been a pleasant surprise transfer to Corbin this year and has made an immediate impact. She really stepped up and played big at the net for us today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The No. 1 Doubles spot was played by the Senior duo of Katie Morton and Lindsay Jones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They posted a perfect 3-0 record on the day, winning the Doubles title in an impressive fashion, dropping only three games the entire day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThese two have been playing together for so many years their chemistry is off the charts, they just move so well together, which is one of the most important parts of success in doubles,\u201d Jones said. \u201cI knew the girls were the slight favorite going into this tournament, but I had no idea they would steam roll their way through like they did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
