LONDON \u2014 The old saying \u2018defense wins championships\u2019 could end up ringing true for the South Laurel Lady Cardinals as another stellar defensive effort against Corbin on Friday moved them one step closer to the 50th District Tournament\u2019s top seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

South Laurel led 19-18 at halftime and eventually handed the Lady Redhounds a 46-34 loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It marked the second time Corbin had been held under 35 points, and it just happens that it\u2019s been the Lady Cardinals who have accomplished the feat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tod Windlan\u2019s squad improved to 16-4 overall and 4-0 against 50th District opponents while the Lady Redhounds are now 14-6, and 2-2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThought we played extremely hard, not our best execution but found a way to win a tough 50th District game in a great atmosphere,\u201dWindlan said. \u201cWe wanted to be more aggressive on offense and exploit mismatches, which we did well in second half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSkeeter Mabe was really good tonight in handling the ball, decision making, and scoring for us,\u201d he added. \u201cCallie Jones had a big fourth quarter, scoring all nine of her points in it. Maci Messer had eight points and Jamie Buenaventura had seven points and a huge basket to end the third quarter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAubrey Bundy played a solid game and it was good to see Ryleigh Bretz return to more minutes and she contributed with four points,\u201d Windlan continued. \u201cWe return to action Tuesday at home versus Williamsburg in a big 50th District game. Proud of my players, coaches and community. Go Cards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Skeeter Mabe turned in a 15-point scoring effort to lead South Laurel while Callie Jones scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter. Maci Messer finished with eight points while Jamie Buenaventura added seven points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kylie Clem led Corbin with 10 points while Raegan Walker finished with nine points and Lydia King scored eight points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
