WILLIAMSBURG \u2014 South Laurel freshman Shelbie Mills continues to impress, scoring a game-high 26 points to lead the Lady Cardinals past Whitley County on Friday, 65-49.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mills entered the game averaging 28 points the past three games, and didn\u2019t disappoint against the Lady Colonels. She also knocked down four 3-pointers in the 16-point victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teammate Jamie Buenaventura added 20 points while Kylie Smith scored eight points, and Maci Messer finished with seven points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhitley outplayed us in the first half,\u201d South Laurel coach Chris Souder said. \u201cWe had no answer for Clemons in the first half. We challenged our kids a little at halftime. We tried to get after them and got some easy baskets that got us going some. Still our youth shows in small areas that we really need to clean up. We think our best basketball is yet to come but it\u2019s getting late, so we need to shore up some things for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The win improved South Laurel to 15-9 overall and 4-1 against 50th District opponents. The Lady Cardinals play their final 50th District game in a week against Williamsburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lady Colonels fell to 12-9, and 1-3 in district play while their losing skid is at four games. They have now lost seven out of their last nine games after getting off to a 10-2 start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aubree Clemens led Whitley County with 24 points while Johnna Rice added nine points. Maddy Hopkins and Amber Brown scored seven points apiece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
